How to attract wild birds to your garden: top tips
Everybody loves to see birds in their garden or patio. They’re amusing to watch and let’s admit it, there’s nothing quite like the sweet sound of birdsong in the morning. Most birds typically pay gardens a visit to see what food is on offer.
If you want to boost your chances of getting a glimpse of wild birds in your garden then read on.
Food glorious food!
The quickest and easiest way to entice feathered friends into your garden is to provide food for them. A simple seed mix is a great start but more specialised foods will tempt a wider range of birds to visit your garden. We have a variety of wild bird feed to choose from so stock up on a mix of seeds, nuts and fat balls to attract different species.
Super Seeds
Sunflower seeds truly are brilliant for attracting songbirds to your garden. Lost of birds love them! However, other types of seeds such as oily nyjer seeds will appeal to different species that aren’t big fans of sunflower seeds. Finches and siskins are particularly fond of nyjer (niger) seeds.
Protein power
Mealworms are a fantastic source of protein for wild birds. They’re especially attractive to robins and blackbirds – they’ll scoff them in seconds when they spot them. Dried mealworms are nutritious and delicious for garden birds. You can rehydrate our dried mealworms too with a bit of warm water. Birds will tweet with joy when they eat these, as they’ll enjoy a tasty and energy-rich meal.
Pick the right place
Make sure that you check on your feeders to see if birds have been paying a visit to your garden. Feeders shouldn’t be too far from trees or bushes but not too close to them too. Cats can use bushes as cover before launching an attack so beware! Pick a safe spot for birds and place feeders where birds can spot danger easily.
Most important of all – be patient and observant! A good range of food, water and shelter will encourage lots of different birds to visit your garden more often.
