Get your garden ready for Autumn

Prepare your garden for autumn

It might feel like summer has only just arrived, but in actual fact, it's time to start getting your garden ready for autumn!

Start preparing for autumn now

Autumn is one of the most important times of the year, when the warmth disappears and chilly, dark evenings set in as a forewarning of the harsh winter weather to come. As such, it really is worth investing some time now to ensure your plants and garden features remain in tip-top condition.

Preparation is key to ensuring your garden can cope throughout autumn and beyond, so make sure you have the following to hand:

    • Shears/secateurs/hoes
    • Digging forks and edging knives
    • Hand trowels and pruners
    • Rakes and lawn rakes
    • Hand garden saws and scissors

Lawn care products, gardening gloves and wellies, as well as greenhouse accessories, never go amiss either.

If you really want to enjoy your outdoor space throughout autumn, your garden needs to be well prepared. To help you, here are some handy tips:

Cut the lawn - your lawn will need a good cut before the cold and wet weather comes around. If the grass gets too long it will be almost impossible to cut during the winter.

Clean and clear - cut back the garden plants, then clear out the shed and greenhouse for winter storage.

Get rid of leaves - throughout autumn the leaves start to fall. Don't let them build up too much as they can soon become slippery and dangerous. Rakes and lawn rakes will be your friend so make sure you have one to hand.

Protect pots - during autumn, a cold snap can arrive without warning. If you have plants susceptible to cold weather, make sure you're able to move them into a greenhouse or conservatory. Frost will damage more delicate plants.

Put a net over the pond - do you have a pond in your garden? Cover it with a net. Autumn can bring a lot of rain which in turn makes a pond very soggy around the edges.

Don't forget the wildlife - as autumn arrives, make sure you leave seeds out for the birds. Why not stock up on bird seeds and animal feed? You'll find a good selection of wild bird and animal feed at Tony Almond's. There's everything from peanut feeders to wild bird seed along with garden accessories such as birdbaths and nesting boxes.
