How to attract wild birds to your garden this winter

Birds bring colour and companionship to our gardens as well as being handy allies in pest control. As winter comes though, it is harder for them to find food, especially in an urban environment. Here at Tony Almond, we've put together our top tips to help you, and our feathered friends this winter.

Affordable Bird FeedersWhat do I need?

Caring for the birds in your garden doesn't have to be expensive. We have a range of affordable bird feeders that can be popped on to a shrub or tree, as well as more elaborate bird tables. You can choose a seed tube, fat-ball feeder or a ground feeding tray, depending on space and the type of birds you want to attract.

A quiet location is ideal, but make sure you can still see all the activity. Watching birds flit and fly is a delightful way to spend your time. Make sure the feeder is in an open location too, so the birds feel safe.

What should I feed?What should I feed?

Different birds like different food. Finches love seeds (Goldfinches, in particular, go crazy for niger seed), Tits love insects, so a suet ball enriched with tiny critters is ideal, although they'll enjoy seed too. Blackbirds and robins love invertebrates, so meal-worms are a real hit. You can choose from sunflower seeds, niger seed, or keep things simple with a seed mix. Suet treats and fat balls are great sources of protein too, so they're ideal for the winter. At Tony Almond, we have a great variety of food so you have a good chance of attracting your favourites. The birds won't have read this guide though so don't be surprised if they disobey the rules.

Left Bird ProductsWhat about water?

It's easy to forget that birds need a supply of fresh water, for drinking and to keep their feathers in good condition. A bird bath is a great addition to your bird care system, just be sure to keep it topped up in summer and ice free in winter.

Remember to keep your bird feeders clean. Scrub the feeder with hot soapy water (always wear gloves) and allow to dry thoroughly before you refill.
